CARPINTERIA, Calif. – June 9, 2010 - With the final votes announced just before 1:00 am, Carpinterians got confirmed what already had been suggested by the results of the mail-in ballots the night before -- no oil and gas development in their seaside town in the foreseeable future. Measure J, Venoco, Inc.’s [NYSE: VQ] highly controversial oil and gas initiative received less than 30% percent of the town’s votes in yesterday’s elections.

On June 8, 2010, voters of Carpinteria -- the small California beach town renown for its surfing and coastal beauty -- will face Measure J, a ballot initiative sponsored by Denver-based oil company Venoco, Inc. If passed, a massive 140 foot tall onshore oil rig would be erected to facilitate the slant-drilling of up to 35 wells for 20-30 years, or possibly forever.

Snaking down Carpinteria Avenue from the post office at Casitas Pass Road, taking a left on Linden, and lining the main drag to the railroad tracks and beyond, hundreds of Carpinterians paraded and waived homemade “No on Measure J” placards on Friday evening-- matching their chants to the constant horn honking from car-driving, like-minded residents. Their unified message rang loud and clear in this typically sleepy seaside hamlet: The town is not for sale and no amount of promised money from a proposed oil drilling initiative will change their minds.

Sleepy seaside Carpinteria woke up this morning to more than 500 ocean lovers saying “No on Measure J” at the Paddle Out Against Paredon event at the city’s beach. Surfers, kayakers, and supporters on the sand symbolized Carpinteria’s strength and sense of community, according to event organizer and surfer Carrie Reynolds. Additionally, the Chumash Maritime Association shared a traditional tomol (canoe).
