Carpinteria City Council Passes Resolution Against Measure J
CARPINTERIA CITY COUNCIL Passes Resolution Against
VENOCO-BACKED Ballot Measure J
CARPINTERIA, CA - March 8, 2010 - C.A.P. (Citizens Committee Against Paredon Initiative) applauds the Carpinteria City Council for passing Resolution No. 5225, which takes an official position of opposition to Measure J, the Paredon Oil & Gas Development Initiative. The vote was 4 -1, with Councilman Joe Armendariz casting the no vote.
Among other claims, the resolution contends that the Venoco, Inc. [NYSE: VQ]-backed initiative interferes with the city's self-rule, evades environmental review, authorizes after-the-fact changes and does not benefit the local economy. (Following is a copy of the resolution.)
The Council Chamber was filled to near capacity with supporters of the council's decision, and no member of the public spoke in favor of Measure J.
"I hope people will investigate the travesty going on and pay attention to the surroundings they live in and not vote to ruin them," said Marnie Leland, who lives in the unincorporated part of Carpinteria and is ineligible to vote on the Measure.
For her first time at the polls on June 8 Carpinteria High School senior Johanna Sedivy plans "vote against it because I don't think it is safe for our environment and we could be spending our money on better things."
About Citizens Committee Against Paredon Initiative
An official ballot measure committee, Citizens Committee Against Paredon Initiative is a grassroots group of community volunteers, including four former mayors, who are deeply concerned about the future of our small city. The group was formed to stop Venoco's attempt to develop a massive onshore oil drilling project -- the proposed Paredon Project -- within the City of Carpinteria without review by the agencies responsible for the health and safety of the community. Carpinterians from every walk of life and political persuasion have come together to face a threat that could change the physical face and social fabric of our community. That threat is the proposed Paredon Oil & Gas Development Initiative, Measure J on the June 8, 2010, Ballot. Visit: www.CitizensAgainstParedon.org.
